Webinar: Landcare: 5 CRPs across 5 Hubs

Landcare Australia, WIRES and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) are partnering on the WildSeek Project: Community Wildlife Intelligence Hubs for data collection and rescue response across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

For WildSeek, Landcare is presented with a very unique challenge of coordinating 5 Chief Remote Pilots (CRPs), 5 drone teams across 5 regions in 3 different states.

So how will they manage this? What does the first stages look like, and what will they do to set the program up for future success and growth?

For this webinar, we are lucky enough to be joined by Landcare Australia’s CRP, Katie Selhorst, who is leading the WildSeek program to discuss how she is managing this, what the journey has been so far, and what is planned for the future!

Key points of Our Interview:

AI-Powered Wildlife Conservation

WildSeek, a partnership between Landcare Australia, WIRES, and QUT, utilizes AI technology to count koalas and establish baseline population data for improved conservation planning and emergency response.

The program operates through five hubs along Australia's east coast, covering regions in NSW and Victoria, with potential for future expansion.

Drone Technology and Operations

WildSeek employs M300 drones with terrain following capability and XT2 thermal cameras, managed by Chief Remote Pilots in each hub who oversee teams and participate in quarterly Lessons Learned meetings.

The program aims to survey over 4,000 hectares of private land by 2025, complementing government efforts to understand koala populations and recovery timelines in fire-affected areas.

Program Management and Future-Proofing

WildSeek has future-proofed its structure by establishing hubs as separate entities, allowing for independent expansion and continuation while reducing risk through decentralized decision-making.

FlyFreely software is used for comprehensive risk management, maintenance tracking, and pilot training, streamlining operations and facilitating easy report submission for land access approvals.
